Stephen Sheridan
Director of Economic Development and Advancement
Stephen is an experienced leader in economic development, bringing over two decades of experience in senior management roles within education and skills sectors. His career is marked by a commitment to fostering robust partnerships among industry, academia and government, particularly within the Highlands and Islands region.
In his current role at UHI, Stephen is at the forefront of initiatives aimed at driving economic growth and innovation across the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Perthshire. His responsibilities include cultivating strategic alliances with businesses, government agencies, research institutions and philanthropic organisations to enhance regional prosperity.
Prior to joining UHI, Stephen served as the Regional Skills Planning Lead at Skills Development Scotland. There, he was instrumental in developing Skills Investment Plans tailored to the Highlands and Islands and chaired the Highlands and Islands Regional Economic Partnership Skills and Labour Subgroup. His efforts significantly contributed to regional growth initiatives, including the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport and various inward investment projects.
Stephen's association with UHI dates back to his involvement in establishing the tertiary Work-based Learning Hub, promoting a regional approach to Foundation and Graduate Apprenticeships. His earlier tenure at the Construction Industry Training Board saw him leading the development of commercial qualifications, securing external funding and forging strategic partnerships.
Stephen is deeply committed to leveraging educational and economic opportunities to benefit the communities of the Highlands and Islands, Moray, and Perthshire.
